Another downer is that severe weather alerts are only unlocked with an in-app purchase of the premium version. Unfortunately, this app doesn’t include transit navigation or traffic alerts. As far as I am concerned, the 1200 premium I paid for the Toyota system has rapidly become obsolete due to the cost of updates. Users get around this by exporting routes to Google Maps but exports are not available in the free version. The interface can be difficult to navigate, and it doesn’t have spoken turn-by-turn directions. Limitations: While the app is free, many features require additional purchases. This is essentially the gold standard of free GPS navigation apps. I ended up shelling out more than 400 dollars in repair costs and a legitimate map update. A flash-memory based system would have been a fiftieth the size and could be updated more easily, not to mention accessed far quicker.Google Maps, provides simple, accurate maps for driving, public transportation, cycling and walking, all in an interface that many of us are used to. Why did Toyota (Denso, actually) go for a DVD-based system? That adds space and weight, is slow, and adds more mechanical parts that can break down. With the stand-alones, on the other hand, Garmin and TomTom and Magellan, and others, are aways trying to one-up each other, because there the choice basically *is* a direct comparison. Why would they bother? It's not like there's any competition-very few people will base a car purchase on the Nav system, and once you've committed to that company, it's either buy it or not (and a lot of people won't know how poor they are compared to the stand-alones).
